Brazil may have 270 million tons of supply deficit

If the projections of some agricultural sectors are correct, Brazil will have a harvest of 500 million tons of grains in the next decade, which would cause a storage deficit of 270 million tons. This is what the technical director of the National Agricultural Society (SNA), Checker Jabour Checker, reported.

According to him, the growth in grain production in Brazil, despite contributing to increasing the country's GDP, is still not being accompanied by an increase in storage infrastructure. “It is a scenario that requires urgent investments, aiming to cover a significant deficit of 122 million tons, according to the National Supply Company (Conab). Aside from this, the timing of the harvests must be considered, allowing the use of warehouses to service different grain harvests, which reduces the deficit a little.”

“Greater resources must be allocated to the construction of warehouses and the acquisition of silos, which have so far proven to be insufficient to meet the needs of farmers. Inadequate grain storage results in approximately 15% of losses, according to studies by Embrapa, also affecting the quality of the product”, highlighted Checker, remembering that the federal government has created conditions for producers to implement storage infrastructure in the country, such as This is the case of the Warehouse Construction and Expansion Program (PCA).

Furthermore, the efficiency of the flow of stored grains is directly linked to logistics that interoperate with the different modes of transport. “It is necessary that we have a National Logistics Plan that allows producers to choose the best options for the flow of their products, to serve the domestic and foreign markets, at a transport cost that allows them to be better competitive,” stated Checker.
