In 2024, Brazil assumes the rotating presidency of a group that includes the 19 main economies in the world, the European Union and the African Union. Rio de Janeiro hosted a meeting of foreign ministers and diplomats from these nations, marking the beginning of a series of events throughout the year.
Brazilian agriculture is highlighted in discussions about the environment, climate change and sustainability. Furthermore, the Brazilian presidency, adopting the motto “Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet”, has already launched an Agriculture Working Group, which addresses crucial topics such as safety in agri-food systems. Minister Carlos Fávaro began discussions via videoconference on February 19, highlighting the relevance of these issues.
The highlighted priorities were widely accepted, encouraging the holding of the next face-to-face meetings in Brasília, Pernambuco and Mato Grosso, together with the summit scheduled for November in Rio de Janeiro. This strategic cycle aims to prepare a technical document to promote sustainable development in agriculture in the countries involved. This is the objective of this strategic cycle.
The group led by MAPA seeks international cooperation in food security, sustainable agriculture, technological innovation and adaptation to climate change, with ministerial support and entities. Furthermore, the objective includes the promotion of good practices, the exchange of information and the reduction of trade barriers through transparency. Finally, the information was released by the National Agriculture Society (SNA), highlighting the importance of the initiative.
