The German chemical and biotechnology giant, BASF, is in the process of expanding the production of ethylene oxide (EO) and its derivatives at its Verbund unit, located in the city of Antwerp, Belgium. Firstly, this ambitious undertaking represents a substantial investment, surpassing the EUR 500 million mark, equivalent to approximately US$ 528 million. This expansion will increase production capacity by 400,000 tons per year, marking an important milestone in the company's growth strategy.
BASF said its complex in Antwerp plays a key role in the production of EO, an essential component in the manufacture of ethoxylated surfactants from raw materials such as natural alcohols and petrochemicals. The unit has the ability to produce purified EO. It also offers capabilities to manufacture alkoxylates and EO derivatives. Thus, these products are used in various sectors, such as detergents, cleaning products, automotive and construction. Therefore, this expansion represents a significant step towards meeting the growing demand for these essential components across multiple industries.
BASF is responding to growing customer demand with a strategic investment. This investment mainly targets alkoxylates. Home care, industrial and institutional applications widely use alkoxylates. The company is focused on strengthening its presence in the European market. Hartwig Michels, President of BASF Petrochemicals, highlights that the new facilities are a significant step forward.
