In an interview with Agência SAFRAS during Avisulat 2022 – VI Congress and South Brazil Poultry, Swine and Dairy Business Center, at Fiergs, in Porto Alegre (RS), the president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association, Ricardo Santin, highlighted that there is a major concern in the Brazilian sector regarding the advancement of cases of avian influenza and African swine fever. “It is important to say first that Brazil is free of these diseases. We are the only major producer in the world that has never recorded cases of bird flu. When we talk about African swine fever, the country has not had this disease for a long time and is free too”, he states.

Santin said that there is a concern to reinforce prevention, for two reasons: the first to keep the country free, avoiding contact with animals in order to avoid any possibility of contracting the disease and, second, so that if we can be able to increase production to help the world.
Santin states that it draws a lot of attention to the fact that winter has not even reached the Northern Hemisphere and bird flu is already killing and decimating flocks in the United States and Europe, spreading to all countries on the continent, as there is a cooler climate. conducive to that. “In the case of African swine fever, there is an increase in cases in Germany and Poland, important supplying countries, and this means that Brazil must be called upon to complement local food security in these countries”, he points out.
The director highlights that the Brazilian animal protein sector is very attentive and careful to reinforce all prevention campaigns and policies, whether for avian influenza or African swine fever.
