Argentina's National Health and Agro-food Quality Service (Senasa) asks the population to notify the population if they see the locust cloud, which is being monitored by the institution, which applies phytosanitary pesticides to reduce the infestation of the insect that threatens crops and pastures, reports the “Brazil Agency”.
Last Friday (26), Senasa located the cloud of locusts 90 kilometers west of the Argentine city of Curuzú. This, in turn, is about 100 kilometers west of Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul.
The concern among Argentines is that the cloud of locusts will attack wheat and oat plantations, which are in the growth phase, as well as animal pasture. According to Senasa, a cloud of locusts is capable of consuming a quantity of leaves equivalent to a harvest capable of feeding 2,500 people in one day.
The insect's diet varies, depending on the species, between leaves, cereals, grass and other grasses. According to information provided to the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development of Rio Grande do Sul, the cloud originates from Paraguay, in the provinces of Formosa and Chaco, where sugar cane, cassava and corn are grown. The species is Schistocerca cancellata.
Last Thursday (25), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply declared a state of phytosanitary emergency in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The measure allows the implementation of a pest suppression plan.
