The March/April 2025 issue of the magazine Oils & Fats International (OFI) brought together relevant topics on innovation, sustainability and market trends in the global oils and fats sector. Highlights include advances in omega-3 encapsulation technologies for functional foods. The publication also addresses the adaptation of the agricultural and industrial sectors in South America to climate change. In addition, it provides an analysis of trade dynamics between Brazil and the United States, focusing on exports and regulatory challenges.
In this edition, we contribute with two articles that address central themes for South American agribusiness. Our expert Tiago Vicente analyzed the current scenario of production of soy in Brazil and the United States. The article discusses the productive advances in Brazil, the strategic role of soybeans in the national economy and the logistical bottlenecks that still limit its international competitiveness. In parallel, it observes how the North American political context can influence global export flows, especially in relation to the Chinese market.
Climate change and the challenges
In addition to productivity losses, the effects extend to logistical, energy and environmental aspects. Therefore, climate impacts do not only affect the field, but the entire chain involved. Among them, soybeans stand out, sunflower, peanut and palm. In addition to productivity losses, the effects extend to logistical, energy and environmental aspects. The article, written by Julia Vilela, Keywe Bonfim, Leonardo Novais, Felipe Di Marco and Maila Dias, reinforces the importance of adaptive strategies, crop diversification and investments in technologies that help mitigate climate risks.
In short, these contributions reflect our day-to-day lives — following what moves the market and understanding the contexts that impact the production and trade of agricultural commodities, so that we can share these reflections with those who also experience this sector closely.
