The Italian agricultural sector strongly opposes the trade agreement that the European Commission reached with the Mercosur group of South American countries in June, Italian Agriculture Minister Gian Marco Centinaio said on Monday.
“We express strong concern,” Centinaio told reporters in Brussels.
He said he believes the Italian government will oppose the deal, which requires a vote from a majority of EU countries to be approved.
He said the agreement is like a “gun to the head” of the Italian agricultural sector, as it offers no guarantees.
“There will be an invasion of products,” said Centinaio, who is a close ally of far-right deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini.
