This Tuesday (24.05) the Brazilian Association of Refrigerators (ABRAFRIGO) sent a letter to ANVISA – National Health Surveillance Agency requesting “an urgent and effective review of current health legislation that can establish microbiological standards for food for human consumption, in particular the inconsistency of the Salmonella issue”, whose presence in meat led to the suspension of production and marketing of some company products as a result of Operation “Weak Meat”, by the Federal Police.
According to the entity, which represents slaughterhouses responsible for approximately 50% of beef production in the Brazilian market, “the current legislation, emanating from both the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health and ANVISA itself is dubious, subjective and contradictory”. It, at the same time, considers the presence of salmonella as a legal infraction that can lead to a fine of up to R$ 500 thousand, and also considers the presence of Salmonella spp. as possible and acceptable.
In its letter, ABRAFRIGO urgently and definitively requests that “regulatory standards be sought that offer security for the consumer and respect the right of companies to work within certain and defined legal parameters”.
