The slaughter of cattle, chickens and pigs in Brazil increased in the second quarter, when compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data compiled by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and published by the CarneTec Brasil portal. According to the latter, this increase reflects the growth in the search for animal protein consumption.
According to the data, which were released last week, “demand for animal protein has increased in the international market, driven by cases of African swine fever in China and other regions of Asia and Eastern Europe. The main Brazilian animal protein processors reported increases in exports in the second quarter, year on year, mainly to Asia”, indicated CarneTec Brasil, through its official website.
In this scenario, cattle slaughter grew by 4.1%, to 8.08 million heads and 2.01 million tons of beef carcasses were produced in the second quarter, an increase of 5.5% compared to the same period in 2018. “The Brazil slaughtered 11.39 million heads of pigs from April to June, an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period last year. The accumulated weight of the carcasses was 1.02 million tons, 4.3% higher than in the same period in 2018”, added CarneTec.
“Chicken slaughter increased by 3.6%, year-on-year, to 1.43 billion heads of chicken. Compared to the first quarter, there was a drop of 1.5%. The weight of carcasses increased by 0.4% compared to the same period last year, to 3.35 million tons”, concluded the specialized portal.
