If it were a country, the state would occupy third place among the world's largest oilseed producers.

If Mato Grosso were a country, it would occupy third place among the world's largest soybean producers. The state can account for almost 29% of Brazilian oilseed production in the 2022/23 harvest, taking into account the latest estimate from DATAGRO Grãos, of 150.81 million tons of grain for Brazil – 43.4 million tons in MT.

In the 2021/22 harvest, the largest producers in the world were Brazil, the United States and Argentina, respectively. The positions are not expected to change in this cycle, but the current projection from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BCBA) points to a significant drop of more than 35% in the current Argentine harvest compared to the average of the last five years, which means that the South American country should harvest 29 million t.

The latest figures from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), released on March 8, forecast production in the North American country at 116.38 million tons in the 2022/23 harvest.

“Mato Grosso's participation in Brazil's production is such that, if we were a country and removed the state's production from the national account, Brazil would become the second largest producer in the world, losing to the USA”, says Anderson Lombardi, secretary deputy of Agribusiness and Investments at the State of MT Economic Development Secretariat (Sedec).

Corn production in MT should surpass soybean production for the 2nd consecutive harvest

For the second season in a row, Mato Grosso is expected to harvest more corn than soybeans. The current estimate from DATAGRO Grãos indicates 47.208 million tons, adding the summer (528 thousand tons) and winter (46.680 million tons) harvests.

With this, the state should also surpass Argentina, whose production in 2021/22 was 52 million tons, but should fall to less than 38 million tons in 2022/23, according to the BCBA.
