Political scientist claims that the government did not prioritize agricultural production.

Defeated at the polls last year, when he was unable to go to the second round of the election for the government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, state deputy from Rio Grande do Sul Edegar Pretto (PT) was confirmed as the new president of Conab (Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento). The official announcement will be made this Friday, January 6, 2023, in Brasília by the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira.

Edegar Pretto is a historic partner of the MST (Movimento dos Sem Terra), having presented projects and actions favorable to activists on several occasions. The PT member's father, former deputy Adão Pretto (died in 2009) was one of the founders of the movement.

In a speech given during the 16th State Meeting of the MST in RS, Pretto stated that the movement “has the recognition of institutions and continues to be a point of reference for the Brazilian working class”. On the occasion, the now president of Conab participated in discussions of the projects and lines of internal actions that define the MST's activities.

The National Supply Company (Conab) is a public company, headquartered in Brasília (DF) and operates by providing the Federal Government with technical information to “support its decision-making regarding the development of policies aimed at agriculture”, according to information from the entity itself. Previously linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), Conab is now subordinate to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming.

According to Paulo Moura, political scientist, “the choice of name indicates that the PT's priority is the MST, and not agricultural production. Lula is putting together a government of the left and politicians, unlike Bolsonaro who prioritized technical criteria and was a pro-market government. This government is facing a crisis just ahead.”
