A new type of hybrid wheat will be available to American farmers and could ease fears about genetically modified crops. The new hybrid is being introduced as seed companies around the world seek to increase production due to dwindling grain supplies.

Hybrid wheat was developed by Chinese agricultural company Syngenta without genetic engineering. The first seeds to grow wheat will be sown on 2,000 to 2,800 hectares of American farmland, according to information from the Reuters news agency.
Developers, or breeders, developed hybrid wheat by taking away the plants' natural ability to pollinate themselves. Instead, female wheat plants in a field are pollinated by male plants of a different lineage. The goal of the process is to create seeds that can produce larger yields and better resist harmful environments.
