Chemical deficit is record

The deficit in chemical products broke a new record and exceeded US$ 62 billion in the last twelve months, according to information released by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim). “Since mid-2021, Brazilian imports of chemical products have consolidated at a new and alarming level, stabilizing, since May, at the chronic mark of US$ 8 billion, practically double the average monthly value recorded before the COVID19 pandemic. , which ranged between US$ 3 and U$ 4.5 billion”, he comments.

“Brazilian exports of chemical products, in turn, have remained stable, at monthly levels much lower than imports, with average sales of US$ 1.5 billion, relative to monthly shipments of 1.2 million tons to destination countries of national goods, only now returning to the same level as the quantities sold in 2017”, he adds, through his press office.

In the year to date, up to August, purchases of chemical products from abroad totaled US$ 55.1 billion, a significant increase of 52.5% compared to the same period in 2021. “Exports, in turn, reached US$ 12.1 billion , an increase of 35.3% compared to the value recorded between January and August last year, a result mainly due to the increase in average prices, of 34.3%, of the main chemical products exported by the country. The deficit in the trade balance of chemical products , until August, it reached US$ 43 billion, an increase of a shocking 58.1% in relation to the same period in 2021, a value, accumulated in just eight months, practically equal to the largest deficit ever recorded, of US$ 46.2 billion (2021) ”, he concludes.
