The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (Seapdr) opens a deadline for qualifying companies that are interested in supplying corn and sorghum seeds for the Seed Exchange Program for the 2022/2023 harvest. The notice for qualification was published today (05/05) in the Official State Gazette and provides a period of 12 days for sending expressions of interest (read the full notice below).
“This is the first step towards starting actions to operationalize the 2022/2023 harvest. Once companies are qualified, we will be able to inform farmers and entities participating in the Seed Exchange Program which cultivars will be available for planting”, says Jonas Wesz, coordinator of the program.

In the last harvest, the program offered 51 corn and sorghum cultivars from 11 different companies. The availability of cultivars and the freedom to choose the most appropriate seeds for each farmer's reality are basic premises of the program.
With the qualification of seed supply companies this year, the portfolio of cultivars will be organized and publicized, presenting the technical details of the materials, with information on the suitability and purpose of use of each cultivar, cycle, type of grain, type of biotechnology used in the seed, tolerance levels to pests and diseases, among others.
“We want the farmer, through his entity and with the support of technical assistance directly from Emater, to be able to choose the material with the best characteristics for his production system and in accordance with the characteristics of his property”, explains Wesz.
