“These negotiations are necessary because the US has imposed sanctions against Iran, and therefore Brazilian companies do not feel safe purchasing Iranian fertilizers — business with Iran could lead to punishments by the US for any company that negotiates a series of products with this Asian nation”, points out the agency.

The information comes from the Minister of Foreign Relations of Brazil, Carlos França, who participated in a public hearing at the Senate's Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee (CRE) last Wednesday (April 6). He highlighted that Iran has a large stock of fertilizers and intends to sell this input to Brazil.
“In Iran there is a large surplus of fertilizers, but Brazilian importers have difficulties negotiating. In practice, what we do with Iran is a barter, because we deposit the resources in an account in Brazil, which is used by Iran to purchase medical supplies and food. That's why I'm negotiating with the United States a temporary truce in this embargo, so that Brazilian companies can negotiate with Iran without suffering reprisals from the United States,” said the minister.
“Iranian fertilizers even make it easier for Brazilian companies to better serve European and United States markets. You remember that a few years ago, even Petrobras was afraid to supply an Iranian cargo ship docked in Santa Catarina due to the possibility of North American reprisals”, added the chancellor.
