The Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) for 2021, estimated based on information from September, reached R$ 1.103 trillion. The number represents a growth of 10% compared to the 2020 value, which was R$ 1.0 trillion.
The value of crops grew by 12%, and livestock, by 6.1%. Breaking down the VBP, it appears that crops account for 67.7%, and livestock for 32.3%. The biggest contributions to achieving this result came from soybeans, corn, sugar cane, beef and chicken meat. Together, their contribution was 72.4%.
Record values, achieved in a series of 32 years, were observed in cotton (R$ 29.8 billion), corn (R$ 121.6 billion), soybeans (R$ 360.3 billion) and wheat (R$ 12.8 billion ). In livestock, records were achieved in beef and chicken meat.

Negative contributions to VBP were observed in peanuts, bananas, potatoes, cocoa, coffee, beans, oranges, tomatoes, cassava and grapes. This behavior had a significant impact on the final result of the VBP.
This year's VBP results bear the effects of climate impacts that occurred in 2020 and 2021. Lack of rain, droughts and frosts affected relevant products such as second-crop corn, coffee, beans and others. However, good international market conditions and favorable domestic prices have been the main growth factors for agribusiness in 2021. As for prices, strong increases can be highlighted this year in seed cotton (27.4%), coffee arabica (22.2 %), sugar cane (10.0 %), corn (27.1%), soybeans (16.4%) and wheat (5.0%).
The regional results show the leadership of the Central-West in revenue this year, R$ 362.87 billion, South R$ 309.2 billion, Southeast R$ 250.9 billion, Northeast R$ 98.3 billion and North 70.0 billion.
What is VBP?
The VBP shows the evolution of crop and livestock performance throughout the year and corresponds to the gross revenue within the establishment. Calculated based on the production of agricultural crops and livestock and the prices received by producers in the country's main markets, of the 26 largest agricultural products in Brazil.
The real value of production, discounted for inflation, is obtained by the General Price Index – Internal Availability (IGP-DI) of Fundação Getúlio Vargas. The periodicity is monthly with updates and publication until the 15th of each month.
