Container handling in June reached 397.1 thousand TEU (unit equivalent to a 20-foot container), an increase of 28.5% over the same month last year. Also in the year to date, the numbers were impressive, reaching 2.4 million TEU, 18.5% above the first half of 2020.

As a result, record levels were established for the month and semester in containers, surpassing the previous marks recorded, respectively, in June 2019 (357.0 thousand TEU) and in the first half of 2020 (2.0 million TEU). This performance increased the overall result of the Port of Santos, which also recorded new records for the month and for the first half of the year.

“The numbers demonstrate that the Port of Santos is efficiently responding to the recovery of the economy, both in agribusiness and industry, whose cargo has been showing strong growth. This is the result of the prioritization that management gives to ensuring infrastructure and constant improvements to operational processes”, stated the Director of Operations at Santos Port Authority (SPA), Marcelo Ribeiro.

In June, 13.3 million tons were handled, an increase of 7.2% over the same period in 2020, becoming the best mark for that month. The same occurred in the year to date, which totaled 76.3 million tons and exceeded the previous record (also from 2020) by 7.9%.

Accumulated movement in the year recorded a volume of shipments of 55.3 million tons, 7.3% above the first half of 2020. Unloadings reached 20.9 million tons, an increase of 9.5% over the first half of the year past.

Liquid bulk presented a result of 7.0% higher than in June last year, reaching 1.6 million tons, reflecting shipments of diesel and diesel oil and fuel oil. The accumulated result for the year totaled 8.8 million tons, a slight drop of 0.25% compared to the same period last year. Even so, it was characterized as the second best brand for the period.

Solid bulk increased by 4.7% in the semester, to 38.7 million tons, representing the best mark for the period. The monthly result, although it showed a drop, was the second best mark for the month of June for solid bulk.

Dockings

In the month of June, there was an increase of 3.5% compared to 2020, with 419 berthings (405 in the same month last year). The total for the semester registered a drop of 0.7%, with 2,436 berthings from January to June (2,453 in the same period in 2020), showing greater ship capacity given that cargo movement increased.

Commercial Current

Santos maintained its historic share in the Brazilian trade chain, with an accumulated share of 27.9%. Around 27.8% of these foreign commercial transactions that passed through the Port of Santos had China as a partner country. São Paulo remains the state with the largest share of commercial transactions abroad through the Port of Santos (55.6%).
