Global production of certified soy reached 4.6 million tons in 2020, an increase of 15% compared to 2019, the International Responsible Soy Association (RTRS) pointed out this Wednesday, which projects a further increase in 2021.

“RTRS certified soy production continues to grow around the world. With a lot of effort, despite the pandemic, agriculture manages to stand out. Last year’s balance sheet proves this trend,” RTRS said in a note.

According to RTRS's external consultant in Brazil, Cid Sanches, sustainability combined with traceability of the entire production chain are the key to these results.

In 2020, Brazil (largest global producer and exporter) continued to lead the list of countries with the highest certified soy production, with approximately 3.7 million tons of the total. The country, however, produced around 125 million tons of the oilseed last year.

Other countries relevant to RTRS soy are: Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, said the entity.

In the last quarter of 2020, 11 new producers certified their production in Brazil and Argentina for the first time, totaling 286,588 tons of certified grains.

In Brazil, among the new certified producers, the association highlighted the Hervalense Group, which produces more than 90 thousand tons of certified soy in an area of 23,709 hectares in the State of Mato Grosso.

“The expectation is that in 2021 the volume of certified soybean production will continue to grow in the order of 15% to 20%, promoting good agricultural practices…”, said Sanches.

Obtaining the RTRS seal guarantees the commitment of several companies to greater sustainability, transparency and traceability throughout the soy value chain.

The RTRS global platform, responsible for auditing crops, enables premiums paid on the price of soybeans to farmers who follow the high environmental and social rigors required by the system.
