The World Bank (Bird) will carry out studies to make the East-West rail corridor viable and then grant it to the private sector. The partnership was closed with the Ministry of Infrastructure. The assessment will cover the Central-West Integration Railway (FICO) and sections 2 and 3 of the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL), totaling 1,900 kilometers.
The section would connect Lucas do Rio Verde (MT) to Ilhéus (BA). The idea is to have a large East-West railway corridor, integrated into the North-South system”, said minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas.
Section 1 of FIOL, between Caetité (BA) and Ilhéus (BA), will be auctioned on April 8th. Section 2 of the railway, between Caetité and Barreiras (BA), is under construction by Valec, expected to be completed in 2022. Section 3 of FIOL, which will connect Barreiras to Figueirópolis (TO) or Mara Rosa (GO), still needs financing to get off the ground.
FICO, between Mara Rosa and Água Boa, in Mato Grosso, will be built by Vale in return for the early renewal of the Vitória-Minas Railway (EFVM). The FICO section 2 project is being prepared, providing for a connection between Água Boa and Lucas do Rio Verde.

The terms of reference for the technical, economic-financial, environmental and legal feasibility studies (EVTEA) are being discussed between the Planning and Logistics Company (EPL), linked to MInfra, and the International Financial Corporation (IFC), an arm of World Bank.
As announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the “project will be guided by socio-environmental guidelines in order to guarantee not only a good modeling for the future concession, but also to attract investors who prioritize sustainable ventures”.
