The Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) is estimated at R$ 1.002 trillion for this year 2021. There was a real increase of 11.8% compared to last year (R$ 896.7 billion). Crops project values of R$ 688.4 billion and livestock production of R$ 314.5 billion. The increase compared to 2020 was 15.2% in crops and 5.1% in livestock. The data includes updated statistics from January this year.
“Two factors are decisive for this result: favorable agricultural prices for most products and good forecasts for this year’s harvest”, analyzes José Garcia Gasques, VBP research coordinator and general coordinator of Policy and Information evaluation at the Ministry of Agriculture , Livestock and Supply.
Favorable performance has been presented by peanuts, with an increase of 4.9% in revenue, rice 9.6%, potatoes 6.8%, cocoa 14.9%, orange 5.9%, cassava 5.6%, corn 23.2% and soybeans 30.3%. In livestock, the highlights are the increases of 9.9% in the VBP of beef, 22.5% in chicken meat and 5% in milk. The highest VBP values are corn with R$ 126 billion and soybeans R$ 326.8 billion.

An important group of products has shown a drop in production value, they are: coffee (-28.4%), sugar cane (-1.8%), tomatoes (-7%), wheat (-3.7%), and eggs (-10.1%). According to Gasques, these declines in these products are a combination of lower prices and smaller production. “But in coffee, the reduction in value can mainly be attributed to the reduction of 33.6% in Arabica coffee production”, he explains. According to IBGE, this crop is still suffering from the drought that occurred in 2020. “We observed that sugar cane has had a systematic reduction in the value of production in the last five years. This affects the results of São Paulo and other states, where sugarcane is relevant”, he highlights.
The five products that lead the VBP are soybeans, corn, sugar cane and cotton, which represent 83.3% of the crops' VBP.
Regional results show positive impacts of VBP. “Taking some states, where soy is the most relevant product, it is noted that in Mato Grosso, this crop represents 61.5% of the VBP of crops; in Paraná 58%, and in Rio Grande do Sul, 64%. In the Matopiba region, which comprises the Cerrado biome in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, soy represents 43.4% of the region's revenue,” explains Gasques.
What is VBP
The VBP shows the evolution of crop and livestock performance throughout the year and corresponds to the gross revenue within the establishment. Calculated based on the production of agricultural crops and livestock and the prices received by producers in the country's main markets, of the 26 largest agricultural products in Brazil.
The real value of production, discounted for inflation, is obtained by the General Price Index – Internal Availability (IGP-DI) of Fundação Getúlio Vargas. The periodicity is monthly with updates and publication until the 15th of each month.
