The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) confirmed this Monday (05) an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in Piauí, reports “Agência Brasil”. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory in Pedro Leopoldo (MG), using a molecular diagnostic technique (RT-PCR in Real Time).
The case occurred in the municipality of Parnaíba, north of the state, in a subsistence pig farm. According to the ministry, the state is located outside the zone recognized as CSF-free by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
“The occurrence has already been notified by the Ministry to the OIE and there are no justifications for restrictions on international trade in pigs and their products. The last PSC focus in Piauí was closed in November 2019”, stated the ministry in a note.

The ministry also informed that the property where the outbreak of the disease was identified was closed and the state veterinary service is adopting the procedures determined by the ministry to eliminate the outbreak, including sacrificing pigs and disinfecting the affected property, in addition to investigations to track down probable origin and epidemiological links.
Classic Swine Fever
Classical swine fever (CSF), also known as swine fever or hog cholera, is a highly contagious viral disease that only affects pigs and wild boars. It does not pose any risks to human health and has no impact on public health.
The state of Piauí is part of the zone not recognized as CSF-free, along with 10 other states (AL, AM, RR, PA, AP, MA, CE, RN, PB, PE). The boundaries between CSF-free and non-CSF-free zones are protected by natural barriers and checkpoints, where surveillance and risk mitigation procedures to prevent the introduction of the disease are continuously adopted.
Brazil's CSF-free zone concentrates more than 95% of the entire Brazilian pig industry. All Brazilian exports of pigs and their products come from the free zone, which incorporates 15 Brazilian states and the Federal District (RS, SC, PR, MG, SP, MS, MT, GO, DF, RJ, ES, BA, SE , TO, RO and AC), and there has been no occurrence of PSC disease since January 1998.
