In a letter sent on the 14th to the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina Corrrea da Costa Dias, the Brazilian Association of Refrigerators (ABRAFRIGO) is asking the government to intensify its efforts in terms of commercial and diplomatic negotiations, including with the World Organization of Commerce, in order to demonstrate the mistakes surrounding the legislative proposals with environmental restrictions that are underway in the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United States “aimed at deconstructing them and safeguarding Brazil’s highest commercial interests”. The letter was also sent to the ministers of Economy, Foreign Affairs and Environment.
According to the entity, which brings together companies responsible for more than 50% of Brazilian beef production, the initiatives in these countries against deforestation in Brazil “have been causing great concern in several Brazilian agro-export sectors, and especially in the beef segment, a Since, if said legislation is approved, companies purchasing Brazilian products will begin to demand more rigorous controls and certifications, inevitably increasing compliance costs and may even make production unfeasible for several industries and agricultural producers”.
Recently, the United Kingdom Government opened a public consultation with the aim of collecting subsidies with a view to drafting new legislation that aims to monitor large companies importing agricultural products regarding risks related to forest deforestation. “Worrying is the fact that this model of legislation, proposed by the United Kingdom, could also be adopted by other important trading partners of Brazil, which could result in a domino effect that could lead to incalculable losses for agribusiness and Brazilian foreign trade ”, states ABRAFRIGO. “It is necessary to emphasize that Brazil has one of the most restrictive and rigorous environmental laws in the world, which places Brazilian agricultural production at a higher level in terms of environmental requirements compared to our main international competitors”, states the entity.
