Brazilian agribusiness exports totaled US$ 5.67 billion in January this year, a drop of 1.3% compared to the same period last year. The volume shipped abroad was 10.16 million tons. The trade balance had a surplus (positive balance) of US$ 4.4 billion.

According to data from the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) analysis based on data from the Ministry of Economy, the main product on the export list last month was raw cane sugar, which had a share of 9.5% in the total foreign sales and reached a revenue of US$ 537.1 million, an increase of 35.6% compared to the same period in 2020. The increase is justified by the drop in the sugarcane harvest in Thailand, Brazil's main competitor in the world market for this item.

Corn was the second most prominent product, with an increase of 42.5% compared to January last year, reaching exports of US$ 499.9 million in the first month of 2021. Completing the list of the five best-selling items is fresh beef, fresh beef, green coffee and soybean meal. Last month, 51.8% of Brazilian agribusiness exports were directed to ten main destinations. The largest participation was from the European Union, with 16.9%. China came in second place, with 16.7%, and the United States had a share of 9.2% of total foreign sales. Highlight is the participation of other Asian countries, such as Indonesia (5.1%), Vietnam (3.1%), South Korea (2.8%) and Bangladesh (2.4%).

According to CNA analysis, exports to China, Brazil's main trading partner in 2020, fell by 36.2% in January this year compared to the same period last year, mainly due to the reduction in soybean sales. The Asian country significantly increased purchases of the product last year and expanded its stocks. January also tends to be a time when oilseed shipments occur in smaller quantities, as harvests are still in their early stages and the first expiries of soybean contracts only occur in March.
