Brazilian agribusiness exports reached the mark of US$ 61.2 billion and 131.5 million tons from January to July 2020, a new record for the period. In relation to the first seven months of last year, the growth achieved was 9.2% in value and 17% in exported quantity.
The analysis by the Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) is based on data released by the Ministry of Economy. The sector's trade balance registered a surplus of US$ 54 billion, the highest value in history for the period.
The main products exported from January to July were soybeans (US$ 23.8 billion), fresh beef (US$ 4.2 billion), cellulose (US$ 3.6 billion), raw cane sugar (US$ 3.5 billion) and soybean meal (US$ 3.5 billion). These five products represented 62.9% of Brazilian agricultural exports in the period.
China was Brazil's main importer, being the destination for 39.2% of agricultural product shipments. Revenue generated from exports to the Asian country was US$ 24 billion in the period. Next came the European Union, where 16% of Brazilian foreign sales went, the United States (6%), Japan (2.1%) and Hong Kong (2%).
July – The month maintained the high level of sales that has been occurring in 2020 and recorded a record for exports and the agricultural trade balance for July. While sales abroad totaled US$ 10 billion, the trade balance was US$ 9 billion. The volume of exports reached 24.4 million tons.
Compared to the month of July 2019, the increase in exported value in 2020 was 11.7%, while gains in volume reached 19.2%.
The main products exported in the month were soybeans (US$ 3.6 billion), raw cane sugar (US$ 790.5 million), fresh beef (US$ 690.7 million), corn (US$ 662 .3 million), and soybean meal (US$ 578.6 million). The five products represented 63.3% of the month's export basket. China was the destination for 38.4% of foreign sales in July.
The highlight of July was the 8.1% increase in sales to Islamic countries compared to the same month of the previous year. Exports reached US$ 1.7 billion, a value that represented almost 20% of the total exported by Brazilian agriculture in July. The best-selling products were sugar and soy. Egypt, Türkiye and Iran, the biggest buyers.

Sectors – The Confederation analyzed the performance of sectors such as tea, mate and spices, fruit, dairy, fish and bee products. These products are the focus of the Agro.BR project, a partnership with Apex Brasil to support the export of small and medium-sized producers, seek new markets and expand the diversification of the export agenda.
For the aggregate of the first seven months of the year, sales of teas, mate and spices reached US$ 203.8 million and increased by 19.8% compared to the same period in 2019, a movement generated, above all, by variations in ginger sales and black pepper which had increases of US$ 15.5 million and US$ 10.1 million, respectively.
Brazilian exports of products from this sector registered, in the month of July, a positive variation of 52.8% in relation to the same month in 2019, and represented US$ 30.4 million and 17 thousand tons in exports in July 2020.
Fruit – In the aggregate of the first seven months of the year, the drops in value and volume in fruit exports were US$ 44.8 million and 4.1 thousand tons respectively, which caused sales to reach the mark of US$ 440, 1 million in 2020, compared to US$ 485.4 million in the previous year.
In July of this year, fruit exports were 15.4% higher in value and 38.4% higher in weight compared to the same month in 2019. The increase was driven by exports of mangoes and apples, which registered a positive variation of US$ 5 .3 million and US$ 3.2 million, respectively, in the same comparison.
Dairy – Sales in the dairy segment increased by 22.8% in value and 21.9% in volume between January and July, driven by the increase in exports of powdered milk, modified milk and cream.
The revenue generated by exports of Brazilian dairy products in the month of July was 50.9% higher compared to 2019, totaling US$ 6.7 million.
Fish – Brazilian fish showed a drop in exported value of US$ 17.8 million in the first seven months of 2020. The total exported was US$ 120.1 million.
In July, the reduction in exported value was 23.7%, compared to the same period last year. Total sales amounted to US$ 29.7 million.
Bee products – The sector recorded an increase of 39.6% in value and 79.3% in exported weight when comparing the first seven months of 2020 and 2019. The variation was driven by an increase of US$ 15.2 million in honey sales Brazilian abroad from January to July of this year, compared to 2019.
In July, honey registered US$ 11.2 million and beeswax US$ 638 thousand in exports, sales higher than those recorded in the same month of 2019.
