Ukraine could lose rapeseed and corn exports to the EU

The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) warned that the country could lose its corn and rapeseed exports to Europe due to the lack of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reported by producers.

European biofuel regulations required reporting of the entire GHG life cycle in crops intended for biofuel production, including cultivation, harvesting, storage and shipping, APK Inform wrote on February 19. However, in Ukraine, there were almost no reports other than a 2017 GIZ-led study that showed that Ukrainian production exceeded EU limits, particularly for corn.

On the other hand, competitors of Ukrainian agricultural producers – such as rapeseed exporters from Australia and Canada – had already prepared reports on the volume of GHG emissions two years ago, which the European Commission had already approved, APK Inform reported.

Speaking on the matter, Serhiy Ivaschenko, executive director of UGA, said that if the Ukrainian government and producers wanted to continue to have access to the European biofuels market, they would need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
