Pork exports hit record in 2019

Sales of pork in Brazil (considering all fresh and processed products) reached record volume in 2019, according to figures revealed today by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). In total, 750.3 thousand tons were shipped over the 12 months of last year. The balance is 16.2% higher than that recorded in 2018, when 646 thousand tons were shipped.

In December alone, 76 thousand tons were shipped, a volume 35.1% higher compared to the same period in 2018, with 56.2 thousand tons. It is the largest monthly shipment ever recorded in the history of the sector.

In revenue, the balance of sales reached US$ 1.597 billion, a number 31.9% higher than the result of 2018, with US$ 1.2 billion. In December, sales reached US$ 183.6 million – the highest monthly balance ever achieved by the sector.

Sales to Asia – a region heavily impacted by outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) – were the biggest boost to exports in 2019. China, which took first place in imports in the first month of last year, imported 248.80 thousand tons, a volume 61% higher than the total shipped in 2018.

Also impacted by PSA, Vietnam increased its imports by 82.6%, with a total of 13.54 thousand tons in 2019.

“The health crisis in Asia has reconfigured the international trade in animal protein. China, which was the most affected, expanded its capacity to import Brazilian pork with the activation of new plants in November 2019. This is one of the factors that should favor the increase in Brazilian sales in 2020, as the indicators of Institutions like Rabobank demonstrate that this situation should last at least throughout the year”, analyzes Ricardo Santin, executive director of ABPA.

In South America, Uruguay was the main destination, with 40.48 thousand tons imported, a volume 12.8% higher compared to the balance of 2018. Chile also stood out, with imports of 44.54 thousand tons (+28. 9%). In Eastern Europe, Russia imported 35.28 thousand tons.

“We have grown our sales not only in Asia, but in other importing regions, such as South America. Our efforts will now be concentrated on strengthening these partnerships and searching for new markets”, highlights Francisco Turra, president of ABPA.

About ABPA – ABPA is the political-institutional representation of poultry and swine farming in Brazil. It brings together more than 140 companies and entities from the various poultry and swine sectors in Brazil, responsible for an export volume of more than US$ 8 billion.

Under the supervision of ABPA is the management, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, of the three sectoral brands of Brazilian poultry, eggs and pork exports: Brazilian Chicken, Brazilian Egg and Brazilian Pork.

Through its sectoral brands, ABPA promotes special actions in target markets and publicizes the differentials of Brazilian poultry and pork products – such as quality, sanitary status and production sustainability – and encourages new business for the export chain of eggs and chicken and pork meat.
