The biodiesel used by the automotive industry must have a low phosphorus content, as the phospholipids contained in the crude oil can affect the effectiveness of the catalyst systems. Furthermore, they can cause contamination and deposits in the tank, filters, pistons, injectors and valves.
To avoid this type of problem, JELU-WERK, a German company that manufactures cellulose and lignocellulose from natural fibers, developed JELUCEL, a cellulose fiber that allows ecological and economical filtration to be carried out, removing phospholipids to serve the biodiesel and vegetable oils. They are available in different fiber lengths, which allows permeability to be adjusted. The fiber is distributed by Ecil Trading and after a partnership was signed, this year, Aboissa Commodity Brokers started to sell the product.
“A natural, renewable and environmentally friendly product, JELUCEL is used in manufacturing and disposal processes, since its cellulose for filtration is 100% biodegradable. Filter cakes with organic lignocellulose are discarded without causing harm to the environment and have a low cost. With little ash content, they can be composted or incinerated. Furthermore, lignocellulose is used in animal feed as it is approved as a food additive. The oil components, obtained from the filter cake, give lignocellulose a high nutritional value, making it possible to sell it as a valuable ingredient for feed manufacturers and farmers”, explains Casagrande, executive at Aboissa.
The material is filtered not only by the porosity of the filter cake, but also by the fibers themselves. This way, the solids are retained and the filter cake does not clog as quickly. Furthermore, JELUCEL protects production facilities and the environment.
The positive properties of cellulose for filtration allow for a more economical application, since the consumption of cellulose is considerably lower than that of natural filtering agents, having a low wet cake density, in addition, there is little loss of product, due to the high permeability. of the filtering agent. Maintenance and repair costs are also low, since cellulose for filtration is non-abrasive.
