Imports of chemical products in Brazil registered a sum of US$ 20.4 billion in the first half of 2019, according to information collected and released by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim). In this scenario, the Association states that the deficit this year could be a record.
Therefore, just as Brazilian imports of chemical products in the first half of the year totaled US$ 20.4 billion, it can be said that there was an increase of 6.1% in relation to the same period of 2018. In a monthly assessment, the value imported is more than US$ 3 billion in every month since March 2018, Abiquim indicated.
“In volume, external purchases had an even more intense behavior, an increase of 14.8%, with a movement of 20.5 million tons, being the second largest in imported quantities for the entire historical Abiquim verification series, with increases in practically all product groups (only lower than the total recorded in the first half of 2017, of 20.8 million tons)”, he adds.
For the executive president of Abiquim, Fernando Figueiredo, the recent conclusion of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union is in line with the Brazilian chemical sector's stance in favor of responsible commercial insertion.
“We are certain that the conclusion of the biggest trade agreement of all time, Mercosur and the European Union, is a sign to the world of a strong trade policy for a new Brazil and we understand that it is essential to implement a consistent competitiveness agenda, based on national structuring reforms, especially Social Security and Tax, and in overcoming limitations related to logistics, energy, bureaucracy, among others, to make full use of the trade and especially investment potential of this agreement and also to make new trade agreements viable mature, safe and that allow the progressive development of trade integration policy and sustainable economic development”, highlights Figueiredo.
