Yum China Holdings has become the first restaurant company in China to obtain International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) for its used cooking oil to be used in biodiesel production, the company announced on May 13.
“We are very proud to be the first restaurant company in China to supply ISCC-certified used cooking oil as a sustainable raw material for biodiesel production,” said CEO Joey Wat.
Yum China launched its first biodiesel conversion pilot project in October 2018 in Chengdu city to convert all cooking oil used in its KFC restaurants into biodiesel. To comply with the ISCC certification process, it has established a data recording and tracking system with local partners (waste collection companies, used oil storage sites and biodiesel plants) to record information about the oil used at all stages of the process. conversion process.
The company said it planned to selectively implement the biodiesel conversion initiative across the country.
“Our biodiesel conversion pilot project and the introduction of reuse baskets in our KFC restaurants emphasizes our commitment to improving sustainability across our value chain, whilst making a positive impact on society and the environment” , Wat said.
The reusable baskets, intended to replace 10 types of single-use paper packaging for fries, chicken and snacks, were introduced in more than 6,000 KFC restaurants nationwide in February and are expected to save more than 2,000 tons/year of paper .
