Bangladesh Agriculture Minister Dr. Abdur Razzak said that a new variety of rice, “Golden Rice”, useful in combating vitamin A deficiency, will soon be released in the country. He presented the information after a meeting with members of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on Thursday (14.02).
According to him, this variety can solve a very serious problem that affects the country, which is the low level of nutrition. Furthermore, the minister also stated that this crop can accelerate agricultural production in Bangladesh.
The different varieties of rice now available on the market contain low amounts of the vitamin and this new variety will help meet the need for vitamin A. “The amount of vitamin A is very low in the rice that is being consumed by people in the country,” Razzak said. .
“Most people in our country live on rice. They also do not eat enough vegetables, because the demand for vitamin A remains incomplete for the most part. When golden rice is produced, the demand for vitamin A will be satisfied. Furthermore, it will also be easier to cultivate golden rice in coastal areas, combating the salinity condition”, he concludes.
