Encouraged by good prices and high profitability, cotton producers expanded the area allocated to this crop in 30% in the state of Goiás, reaching 42,535 hectares cultivated compared to 32,691 in the last harvest. If we look at the last two harvests, the increase already reaches around 60%. “The state of Goiás has been growing in area over the last three harvests and this year was the largest planted area in recent years. The growth occurs in relation to the return on investment, cotton has had attractive prices in the last three years and producers have increased the area within the producers that already produced cotton”, says Carlos Alberto Moresco, president of Agopa (Associação Goiana dos Cotton Producers).
In the wake of this increase in area, average productivity also registered an increase in the state, going from 285 arrobas per hectare to 299 in the last harvest. For this year, the expectation of the producer from Goiás is to continue increasing this number.
“Planting ended on January 31st and the harvest is expected to be good. We have a climate so far that, despite the adversities for soybeans, has had little effect on cotton so far. Productivity is an element formed by a series of factors and, this year, we hope to repeat the productivity of other years”, comments Moresco.
