Department of Agriculture carries out research in planted forest areas in Tocantins

With the aim of carrying out a study on planted forests in Tocantins, a team from the Government of Tocantins, through the Secretariat for Agriculture and Livestock Development (Seagro), together with technicians from the Information System for Forest Planning of the Brazilian Cerrado (Siflor Cerrado ), carries out visits to various properties in the State from the 18th until the 30th.

In the first week of work, the 18th to the 22nd, the teams visit forest plantations in the regions of Novo Concordo, Rio Sono and Lizarda. Next week, from the 25th to the 30th, technicians will collect data on properties in the municipalities of Brejinho de Nazaré, Aliança, Alvorada, Jaú, Peixe, Gurupi, Dueré and Formoso do Araguaia. Currently, Tocantins has a total planted forest area of more than 160 thousand hectares, with eucalyptus being the main planted species, with potential for the cellulose and energy sector.

The study aims to carry out a dendrometric survey of planted forests (eucalyptus, teak, cedar, mahogany, among others), another task is to outline the profile of foresters in the regions studied. The actions aim to better organize the timber sector and build a bank of technical information on species best adapted in Tocantins. The actions are being carried out in partnership with the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ) University of São Paulo (USP-SP), through the Siflor Project.

The activity is part of Goal 01, stage 01, of Siconv agreement nº 793211/2013, which has as its main focus technical missions to eucalyptus production centers, according to forestry engineer, Arlete Leite.

Siflor

The project is developed in several states that have a cerrado biome. The tool can help producers and technicians from rural extension services in choosing forest plantation species, both in monoculture systems and Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration (ILPF), considering the aspects of adaptation to climate and soil, productivity, regional market and , availability of genetic material. In Tocantins, the program is developed with support from the Government of Tocantins, through Seagro.
