Frosts hit sugarcane fields in Mato Grosso do Sul

The cold front that has parked over Brazil since last Monday brought at least two frosts in the sugarcane fields of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The information was confirmed today by the president of BioSul – Association of Bioenergy Producers of MS, Roberto Hollanda Filho and the consultant from TCH Gestão Agrícola, José Trevelin Júnior.

According to Roberto Hollanda, in the early hours of Tuesday (18) some incidences of frost were recorded mainly in the southern region of the state, which has the majority of MS production, but in the early hours of today (19), the incidence was more widespread .

“The plants had already been doing their homework and, through varietal and harvest management, were taking precautions against the possibility of frost, but as the coverage was almost total in several regions of the state, there could be losses, but it is still too early to If we calculate, only after one to two weeks will we be able to quantify the losses”, highlighted the president of BioSul.

According to Trevelin, of the approximately 20 plants in operation in Mato Grosso do Sul, ice was confirmed in at least 16 units in the early hours of today. “And there is still a forecast of new frost for Thursday morning. We saw temperatures below zero and many plants reported that they saw ice on the sugarcane leaves or even in the ratoon areas”, highlighted Trevelin.

The sugarcane production outlook for this harvest in Mato Grosso do Sul is 51.4 million tons. After quantifying the losses, this estimate can be revised, as well as a loss in the amount of ATR (total recoverable sugars) of the raw material.
