Government of Tocantins reinforces cooperation between the states of the Legal Amazon

Nine Environment Secretaries are meeting this Friday, 5th, in Porto Velho, Roraima, for the meeting of the Forum of Environmental Secretaries of the Legal Amazon. The interstate meeting, which began on Thursday the 4th, is attended by the governor of Tocantins, Marcelo Miranda, the secretary of the Environment and Water Resources (Semarh), Meire Carreira, and the secretary of Communication, Kênia Borges.

The federations that make up the Legal Amazon – Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Roraima, Rondônia, Pará, Maranhão, Tocantins and Mato Grosso – are strengthening and establishing cooperation between environmental and economic actions, aiming at the sustainable development of Amazonian populations in the search for conservation forestry, climate protection and strengthening environmental management.

During the meeting, secretary Meire Carreira informed that projects, challenges and positive results are being shared among peers. “Tocantins has been investing a lot in improving the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) platform and also in acquiring the information base and its final implementation. It is a successful experience that we can share with other states”, stated the manager. The idea, according to the secretary, is for the exchange of knowledge between the states to occur.

At the Forum, Meire Carreira highlighted that the advancement in the decision-making alignment as a block for the Amazonian states establishes a sharing mechanism. “The use of technology to combat deforestation, especially in what concerns the CAR. Which is a common challenge”, he clarified. Another agenda for strengthening the Secretaries' Forum in the international field, according to Meire, is the proposal to create Legal Amazon Day, “which will be held during COP 23, in Germany. The objective is for the nine states to be able to attract financing for the preservation of the Amazon biome”, he concluded.
