An area of no less than 700 thousand hectares is completely flooded in the region between the provinces of Córdoba and Buenos Aires – part of the so-called “Core Zone” of rural production in that country. The survey was carried out and published by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) of Argentina, in partnership with other entities.
The study was prepared using satellite images (until January 17) and completed with a survey of local producers. Of this affected region, 17% of the crop was lost, 10% did not even present conditions to be planted and 16% registered a “regular” situation, and could be lost in the event of new rainfall – the majority of corn and soybeans.
Another problem is the extensive livestock production in the region. “It is estimated that there are a total of 15 thousand animals in the area affected by excess water. Some establishments reported losses in milk production and the emergence of illnesses”, points out the survey.
