Cargo movement in June reached 16.3 million tons, a growth of 4.6%, which raised the accumulated total for the semester to 89.1 million tons. This increase represents 10.2% over the same period last year. Both the monthly and half-year results were the highest figures for the periods ever recorded at the Port of Santos.
“The records broken by cargo movement reinforce the importance of the Port of Santos for Brazil and the world. Furthermore, they prove the correctness of the measures taken by the Ministry of Ports and Airports, in perfect harmony with the priorities of the management of the Port Authority of Santos, which promotes unprecedented investments in infrastructure and also in expanding the capacity of the largest Port in the Southern Hemisphere”, stated the president of APS, Anderson Pomini.
Furthermore, the result for the first half of 2024 exceeds the entire movement of 2009 (83.2 million tons), indicating that, in 15 years, the Port of Santos doubled its annual movement.
Agribusiness and containerized cargo boost performance in Santos
Agribusiness cargo continues to outperform this performance. For example, shipments of sugar, with 12.0 million tons (+48.6%); pulp, with 3.8 million tons (+4.3%); meat, with 1.2 million tons (+27.5%); and coffee beans, with 1.2 million tons (62.0%) were the highlights in the semester. In addition, shipments of fuel oil, with 1.9 million tons (+6.4%), and gasoline, with 645.1 thousand tons (+71.3%) stood out.
Containerized cargo performed excellently in the first half of the year, with 2.6 million TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent units) operated in both flows (loading and unloading), resulting in growth of 16.5% in the first half of the year. In June, 439,614 TEU were operated, an increase of 13.8%.
Furthermore, in terms of discharges, diesel oil and gas oil had the best performance, with 1.3 million tons (+66.9%). In total, shipments in the first six months of the year totaled 66.6 million tons (+10.7%) and discharges 22.5 million tons (+8.5%).
Finally, the highlights in June were sugar, with 2.6 million tons (+8.4%); cellulose, with 601.6 thousand tons (+14.4%); meat, with 201.0 thousand tons (+24.6%); and coffee beans, with 176.8 thousand tons (+45.1%).
Also in June, shipments reached 12.2 million tons (+1.8%) and discharges 4.0 million tons (+14.3%). Consequently, the flow of ships reached 2,777 berthed vessels in the first half of the year, an increase of 4.3%.
Solid bulk
The results showed an increase of 4.0% in the accumulated half-year (46.3 million t), compared to 2023, characterizing itself as the best mark for the period. In fact, highlights include exports of sugar and soybean meal. The participation of soy in grains in this volume was 51.1%; of sugar, 22.5%; of pelleted soybeans (bran), 10.7%; of corn, 2.6%; and fertilizer, 7.2%.
Liquid bulk
Result 6.7% higher than the first half of last year, reaching 9.6 million tons, the best mark for the period. The share of cargo in the global volume of liquid bulk was 4.9% for diesel oil and gas oil. 3.7% for fuel oil. 2.4% for citrus juices. 1.4% for gasoline. 1.1% for caustic soda and alcohol.
Commercial Current
Santos' accumulated share in the Brazilian trade flow was 28.9%. Furthermore, approximately 24.0% of these foreign trade transactions that passed through the Port of Santos had China as a partner country. Finally, São Paulo remains the state with the largest share in foreign trade transactions through the Port of Santos, accounting for 43.8%.
