Scientist Rattan Lal, renowned soil science expert and Goodwill Ambassador of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), told a G20 meeting that agriculture must play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and creating of solutions to global environmental challenges.
Furthermore, agriculture must guarantee global food and nutritional security and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The G20, the main forum for global economic cooperation, is under Brazilian presidency this year. The group also includes Argentina, Canada, the United States and Mexico.
IICA, recognized for its leadership in promoting sustainable and productive agriculture in the Western Hemisphere, received an invitation to participate in the Agricultural Scientific Leaders Meeting (MACS) in Brasília. This group, linked to the G20, brings together ministers and senior agricultural officials, together with research and technical cooperation organizations. The future of the agricultural sector is discussed, sharing information on agricultural resources, capabilities and infrastructure.
The Brazilian presidency invited IICA to participate in the meetings of the G20 Global Initiative on the Economy. The initiative seeks to incorporate the High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy into the Rio Declaration, adopted by global leaders at the end of the year. Furthermore, Professor Rattan Lal and Muhammad Ibrahim represented IICA at the MACS meeting in Brasília, under the Living Soils of the Americas initiative. On the other hand, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) held a meeting with the support of the Minister of Agriculture, highlighting its importance in Brazil's agricultural advancement.
