Mato Grosso remains a pillar in national agricultural production and is expected to reach 85.7 million tons, even with the reduction of 15% in relation to the record harvest recorded in 2023. The information is from the 8th Survey of the 2023/2024 Grain Harvest, released this Tuesday (14.05) by the National Supply Company (Conab).
The State's production is equivalent to the entire production of the three states in the south of the country, which should harvest 85.6 million tons.
In the case of soybeans, whose harvest ended at the end of April, Mato Grosso should harvest 38.4 million tons, 15.8% less than in the last harvest, which reached 45.6 million tons of the oilseed. However, the planted area increased by around 100 thousand hectares, reaching 12.1 million hectares planted this season.
“It is important to highlight that even with this reduction in production, Mato Grosso will continue to contribute significantly to the global scenario. Thus surpassing the sum of the combined harvests of important producing countries such as Bolivia, Ukraine, Russia, Canada and Paraguay together, or even more than India and China combined. In this way, the State consolidates itself as the 4th largest soybean producer in the world”, pointed out the coordinator of the Mato Grosso Economic Data Center (DataHub), of the State Secretariat for Economic Development (Sedec), Vinicius Hideki.
Mato Grosso's agricultural power surpasses global giants
Mato Grosso's production is greater than the combined production of Bolivia, Ukraine, Russia, Canada and Paraguay, combined. It is also higher than the total volume produced in China and India.
According to Vinicius, these numbers highlight not only the resilience and productive capacity of Mato Grosso, but also its relevance in the international agricultural context, feeding the world population and boosting the global economy with its intense work in the fertile fields of the Brazilian Cerrado.
In the case of corn, the crops have shown excellent vigor in their development. The regularity of rainfall has strengthened expectations of good productivity. Most crops are in the reproductive phase, especially flowering. However, production should be 17.2% lower, reaching 42.4 million tons.
Many producers chose to produce cotton (lint and seed) as a second crop and the planted area grew by 18.6% and reached 1.4 million hectares. Production should also be higher than in the last harvest at 17.2%, reaching a total of 6.3 million tons, equivalent to 71% of national cotton production.
Effects of Rio Grande do Sul
Conab's estimate for Brazilian production this season is 295.45 million tons of grains. However, the heavy rains recorded in Rio Grande do Sul will have impacts on the final result of the current cycle.
“It is not yet possible to have precision in the losses for the sector in the state. Water levels are high and access to properties is difficult, making it impossible to carry out a more detailed assessment. And it is worth highlighting that at this first moment the concern is with lives and ensuring supply. Ensure that people affected by the rains have the right to basics, such as food”, reinforces the president of the Company, Edegar Pretto.
