Brazil is working on a plan that should set an initial goal of tripling the country's biofuel production by 2030, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The expectation is that the initiative, which is being called RenovaBio, will help the country reach 2030 with a production of approximately 100 billion liters of biofuels per year, said the source, on condition of anonymity because the plan is not yet public.
The target is valid for ethanol, biodiesel and biofuels in general. In 2030, the numbers already consider the country producing a greater volume of biogas and biokerosene for aviation, the local supply of which is currently practically nil. “It will be a revolution in the sector”, said the source, who added that the plan should focus mainly on a microeconomic agenda to boost investments and employment in the biofuels area.
On Monday, authorities from the Ministry of Mines and Energy stated that the RenovaBio plan will be presented to agents in the biofuels sector at a meeting scheduled for December 13 at the ministry's headquarters. The government's schedule foresees the opening of a public hearing on the plan in 2017. The idea is that after this consultation process, RenovaBio will be submitted to the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), which brings together federal authorities in the energy sector. , in the middle of next year.
