In February 2024, experts, producers and investors from sector of peanuts met in Itaju (SP) to discuss the panorama of harvest 2023/24 and the innovations that will propel Brazil into leadership in peanut oil exports. Despite occupying 12th place in world peanut production in 2023, Brazil maintains first place in peanut oil exports, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), with 86 thousand tons sold.
Rodrigo Chitarelli, CEO of CRAS Brasil, highlighted the Brazilian potential in the global market. “The Chinese market, which represents 80% of purchases of Brazilian peanut oil, has increasingly demanded our product. If we increase planting and improve the quality of the grain, we can naturally expand our exports”, stated Chitarelli, who recently doubled the production capacity of his factory to meet growing demand.
Expansion and challenges in the 2023/24 peanut harvest
According to CONAB data, the 2023/24 peanut harvest in Brazil presents an increase of 15% in planted area and 2% in production, despite irregular rains and high temperatures. Renata Martins Sampaio, researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Economics, warned of climate challenges that could affect peanut production and exports.
However, Chitarelli remains optimistic, stating that water stress will not impact peanut oil production. “The abundant rains forecast for February will boost our harvest and help us reach our goals,” he commented.
The event in Itaju also highlighted the crucial role of seed varieties in the industry. Furthermore, the Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC) and Embrapa presented dozens of new varieties and seed lines, thus aiming to improve the quality and efficiency of production.
Ignácio Godoy, researcher at IAC, emphasized, however, the commitment to the technology of production. “Our objective,” said Godoy, “is to offer varieties that meet the demands of mechanized production, both for the domestic market and for export.”
Itaju (SP) thus continues to stand out as the national capital of peanut oil, contributing significantly to Brazilian exports of the product. Advanced research and production guarantee Brazil leadership in the global oil market in 2024 and beyond.
