The drop in most vegetable prices is highlighted in the 9th Prohort Bulletin on Commercialization of Vegetables in Ceasas in 2016, released this Tuesday (20) by the National Supply Company (Conab).
Potatoes and onions lead the price drop in all markets studied. The largest reduction percentages for the two vegetables occurred at Ceasa Brasília: 23% for potatoes and 27.8% for onions. Lettuce and carrots also registered a decline in values in most of the supply centers analyzed. The price drops were due to favorable weather conditions that increased the supply of products.
The exception this month was tomatoes, which registered an increase in seven of the nine Ceasas studied. The biggest adjustments took place in the warehouses of Campinas (SP) and Belo Horizonte (MG) with rates of 37.26% and 33.55%, respectively. In the supply centers of Fortaleza and Recife there was a drop of 10.10% and 4.11%, respectively. The rise in tomato prices could be repeated in September, due to adverse weather conditions.
Fruits
After three months of continuous price drops, papaya shows a widespread and substantial increase. In the centers of Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Brasília, the fruit had a three-digit increase, with rates rising between 118.24%, in Brasília, and 159.43%, in BH. The smallest adjustment occurred in the northeastern capitals, Recife (39.34%) and Fortaleza (41.81%). The trend should continue until the end of the year, as a result of the reduction in supply due to the drought in the north of Minas Gerais and the west of Espírito Santo.
Banana also showed an increase in values, mainly in Curitiba (39.37%) and Campinas (38.49%). The increase was also due to the drop in supply, but due to frost and a drop in temperature in some producing regions. Watermelon prices fell in six of the nine markets studied, due to the harvest in Goiás and Tocantins, with increases only in the Northeast – between 10% in Recife and 15.7% in Fortaleza.
The survey is carried out monthly, based on information provided by large wholesale markets in the country, through Conab's Brazilian Horticultural Market Modernization Program (Prohort). To analyze the behavior of prices in August, the main warehouses in the states of SP, MG, RJ, ES, PR, CE, PE and DF were considered.
