Host of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), the United Arab Emirates is in the TOP 10 of the world's largest oil producers. In contrast to this position, the country opened the doors to accelerate discussions on the role of biofuels in the decarbonization of the transport sector in the world.

Once again, the Brazilian government and the national private sector arrive at a meeting of cohesive world leaders on the country's responsibility in the energy transition. The delegation carries a plan about Brazil's responsibilities, but also how the country can cooperate with the world in combating climate change.

“It may seem like a paradox that we are discussing decarbonization in Dubai. However, for me, it is a signal that one of the major oil producers is giving to the world. The climate situation has reached its limit and it is no longer possible to wait. Fortunately, Brazil has a lot to contribute”, says Evandro Gussi, president of the Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica).

Panel at COP28 will address the energy transition

Unica and the Brazilian Export Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) will hold a panel during COP28 on the energy transition in the context of the Global Alliance for Biofuels (GBA).

The alliance, created jointly by India, Brazil and the USA during the last G20 summit in New Delhi, aims, similarly, to bring together 19 countries and 12 international organizations with the aim of promoting sustainable production and use of biofuels in the world, and will remain open to new members.

The event will bring together, on December 1st, representatives of the Brazilian government, such as the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and the president of ApexBrasil, Jorge Viana. Representing the private sector, Embraer vice-president, José Serrador, will speak about the use of biofuels in aviation.

International debaters highlight Brazil's role in the biofuels sector during an event in Dubai

The debate, finally, will also feature representatives from important international entities.

Thus, Vibha Dhawan, director general of the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) of India, will be present. Similarly, Federico Villareal, director of technical cooperation at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), also confirmed participation. Paolo Frankl, head of the renewable energy division at the International Energy Agency (IEA), is included in the attendance list.

Over more than 40 years, Brazil has achieved technological, marketing and public policy advances in the bioenergy area, inspiring and driving international actions. Together with other countries in the Global South, we can be, for biofuels, what the Middle East is for Oil. More than 3 billion people can benefit from this solution”, says Gussi.

In Dubai, ApexBrasil and UNICA will sign a technical and financial cooperation agreement. The agreement aims to develop a sectoral program to promote and expand the sugar-energy sector, valid until 2025. The act will be shortly after the panel “Bioenergy and energy transition in the context of the GBA”.

UNICA will also fulfill an extensive agenda of meetings and participate in panels and debates on the energy agenda in the climate context.
