The global supply of used cooking oil (UCO) is expected to increase from 14 billion liters (3.7 billion gallons) in 2022 to 18.9 billion to 37.8 billion (5 billion to 10 billion gallons) by 2030, according to a new report from US trade association Clean Fuels Alliance America.

Meanwhile, according to the report, US supplies could increase. It is estimated that it will increase from 3.2 billion liters (850 million gallons) to 4.1 billion liters (1.1 billion gallons) by 2030. These projections are presented by the authors, LMC International and GlobalData.

U.S. Clean Fuels Trend Offers Opportunities for Sustainable Supplies of Oils and Fats

“Growing demand for cleaner fuels is driving the opportunity to develop additional supplies of low-carbon oils. Donnell Rehagen, CEO of Clean Fuels Alliance America, highlighted this in his September 13 report. This demand includes biodiesel, renewable diesel and SAF, and is creating opportunities to recycle used cooking oil and surplus crop oils.”

Our industry has plans to produce 22.7 billion liters (6 billion gallons) of clean fuels by 2030. Additionally, this report identifies additional raw materials crucial to achieving this goal. Our vision supports national goals to decarbonize aviation and other heavy-lift transportation sectors.

According to the report, the US has the best-developed UCO collection system due to long-standing practices for its use and disposal.

Increasing biodiesel and renewable diesel production in the US was driving domestic UCO use – therefore reducing recent export trends, according to the report.

The report highlights that the majority of OAU supplies are transported from Asia to Europe. Furthermore, it indicates the potential to expand the collection of UCO in Asia, Europe and South America, meeting global demand.

According to the report, these countries could achieve additional collection by adopting US-style collection practices.
