This Monday morning (25), in a meeting at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the Government of São Paulo finally presented to a North American delegation the main actions for the state's energy transition and commitments of the current management in the area of sustainability .
The Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Antonio Junqueira, and the executive secretary of the Department, Guilherme Piai, were present and highlighted, first of all, the main fronts of SAA's action towards climate neutrality in São Paulo. “We have 3% of Brazilian territory and we are the state in Brazil with the highest productivity index per hectare. Production is sustainable, diversified and guarantees supply to different states and countries”, commented Junqueira.
Furthermore, the secretaries presented the state's potential in the area of renewable fuels, with direct action in mitigating the effects of global warming through the supply of green energy beyond its borders. For Junqueira, the sector has the potential to be a major exporter of bioenergy. “São Paulo has the biggest and best sugarcane plants and some of them, voluntarily, already guarantee energy security to communities close to their activities”, he highlights.
Advances in the São Paulo sugar and alcohol sector and renewable fuels: Highlights from the meeting at the palace
The executive secretary highlighted, on the other hand, the recent figures for the sugar and alcohol sector from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA), linked to SAA. “The sugar and alcohol complex had the largest share of São Paulo's agribusiness exports, with 34.1%, totaling US$ 6.09 billion in exports. This is a number that highlights the relevance of green alternatives in the agricultural economy of São Paulo”, concluded Piai.
It is worth mentioning that the São Paulo administration presented the State Environmental Plan. This plan foresees investments of R$ 2.13 billion, coming from public and private resources. Furthermore, an additional R$ 5.6 billion is already planned for the IntegraTietê program until 2026. The launch was carried out in June at the Tietê Ecological Park, in the capital of São Paulo, by governor Tarcísio de Freitas.
Several authorities attended the meeting at the Palace: the Secretary of International Business, Lucas Ferraz; the Undersecretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, Jônatas Trindade; the executive secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation, Thiago Liporaci; Ambassador David Thorne; the United States consul general in SP, David Hodge; and climate adaptation expert Aparna Shrivastava.
