The agribusiness trade balance in the State of São Paulo from January to May this year showed a positive balance, with a surplus of US$ 7.97 billion. The figure is 7.3% higher than the same period in 2022, according to data from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA), from the São Paulo Agency for Agribusiness Technology (APTA), an agency of the State Department of Agriculture and Supply.
The result was driven by an increase of 7.1% in exports, reaching US$ 10.15 billion, more than the 6.3% in imports that totaled US$ 2.18 billion. As a result, the sector's share in sales abroad in the State's total represented 37.4%, while that of sectoral imports, 7.2%.

Considering all sectors of the São Paulo economy, exports from the State of São Paulo already total US$ 27.13 billion (19.9% of the national total), and imports, US$ 30.25 billion (29.9% of the country's total). In relation to the same period in 2022, these results represent an increase of 3.6% in exports and a reduction of 2.5% in imports.
National Scenario
The participation of São Paulo's agribusiness in the Brazilian trade balance grew in the first five months of 2023. The São Paulo result represents 15.1% of the total exported by the country from January to May, an increase of 0.2 pp compared to the same period in 2022.
Five aggregates correspond to almost 80% of exports in the sector. The largest share is from the sugar and alcohol complex, which mainly comprises raw and refined sugar and ethyl alcohol, and sold US$ 2.61 billion outside the country in the period.
The second biggest highlight is the soybean complex (grains, bran and oil), which exported US$ 2.14 billion, followed by meat (mainly beef, chicken and pork in natura or processed), with sales of US$ 1.21 billion; forestry products (cellulose, paper, wood and rubber), with US$ 1.12 billion; and juices (mainly orange), with US$ 835 million.
In addition to the trade balance, the agribusiness sector has accumulated other positive highlights, such as a balance of 3,800 jobs created in April. Among the factors that help explain this improvement is the prospect of increased production of the 22/23 harvest in relation to the previous period, driven by heavy rains at the beginning of the year and investment in agricultural technologies, which help to increase crop productivity. crops.
